Text Box: The Accelerated Reader Program at Armada Elementary School
…began in the mid 1990s when Mrs. Shirley Hugger began using the program with some of her first graders. Initial funding for Accelerated Reader came from a grant from the Gifted and Talented Committee, and through the years support has come from the Armada Education Foundation, the Four County Foundation, Armada Elementary’s Tiger Cub Boosters, numerous local businesses and the Elementary School Book Fairs.
What is Accelerated Reader?
The AR Program is a reading motivation program. Studies show that students who read more do better on standardized tests. A paper presented at the National Reading Research Center Conference on Literacy and Technology for the 21st Century reported that schools using the Accelerated Reader program performed statistically significantly better on TAAS (Texas Assessment of Academic Skills) than non-Accelerated Reader schools in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies in grades 3-8 and grade 10. (Paul, T.D., D. VanderZee, R. Rue, & S. Swanson. Impact of Accelerated Reader on Overall Academic Achievement and School Attendance. October, 1996.) Educational jargon aside, kids who read, SUCCEED!
How Does it Work?
Students read specially labeled books that are part of the library’s general collection and then take a computerized multiple-choice test about the book’s content on the computers in their classroom or the Media Center. From the Hardy Boys to Harry Potter, Curious George to Henry and Mudge, children will certainly find books that inspire them. And the immediate feedback after a test encourages them to keep reading!
