After the International Space Station radio
contact with Astronaut Mike Fincke, former USECA member Tom Tincknell
(N8ZI) and member Ed Tincknell (KD8CXJ) addressed the 7th
grade students at Armada Middle School. The father/ son team allowed
students to talk on the radio and answered question about the hobby.
Many students were interested in learning more. Therefore, USECA member
and Armada Middle School teacher/librarian Geri Asaro (KD8KCE), applied
for the ARRL Big Project Grant in May. The grant was approved over the
summer and Mrs. Asaro went for additional training through the ARRL Teacher
Institute.
Armada
Mrs. Asaro would also like to extend a special thanks to the members who generously donated their time to come to Armada Middle School and speak with the students! Chuck (N8ZA), Walt (WB8E), Bill (N8SA), Ray (K8RJD), Larry (WB8SJD) and Ed (KD8CXJ) spoke with our 6th grade students over the course of three days. The students were very receptive and their presentation was a hit! The students enjoyed talking to USESCA members on the repeater who were willing to lend a hand!
The Armada Middle School Newsletter for the month of November will feature additional information on the radio club and will be distributed to all students. Those who are interested in being a part of a radio club at the school will then be allowed to spend their lunch time, and selected after school days beginning in January, learning more about the hobby and making contacts. We are also asking that each member purchase the Technician’s Manual and begin working on obtaining their license.
